Northeast Ohio’s Suede Brothers have been producing no-nonsense, ballsy, bluesy rock for three records and nearly five years now. Through it all, the band has had a solid, Rust Belt aesthetic that is impossible to deny.

The band comprises Dylan Francis (guitar, vocals), Kevin Naughton (bass) and Mike Varga (drums). Varga just turned 21, so the group is now fully legal to hang out in all the clubs they play.

Suede Brothers are polishing up some new songs and hope to head into the studio in June.

Cleveland Kitchen took the chance to catch up with the band via a few questions to Francis.

Cleveland Kitchen: It’s been awhile since since we have heard from Suede Brothers. Bring us up to speed on what’s keeping the band busy.

Dylan Francis: Over the past several months we’ve been focused on finishing all our new material, rehearsing it over and over. We’re up to about 13 or 14 songs now, so we’re pretty occupied with that work at present.

We’ve played a handful of shows over the past couple of months as well, but between working on the new material and our school schedule, it’s been less than we’d like.

CK: How does the new material compare with what has come before?

DF: Our new songs are always a step forward for us, and I think this new batch is no different. We’re really happy with them thus far, and I personally think they’re some of the most enjoyable songs to play that we’ve come up with.

I think we’re constantly improving in our song writing, and this is no different. I’m really happy with where we’re at, in regards to the new material. It should be harder hitting than anything we’ve done to date.

CK: The production value on previous Suede Brothers releases has been quite high. Tell us a little about your recording process, your studio practices. Where will you be recording? With whom?

DF: We’ve recorded all our albums at Suma with Paul Hamann as the engineer/co-producer and myself and and my dad/manager, Chris, producing as well.

It’s hard to go wrong recording there, with Paul’s knowledge of the equipment and room, as well as the overall vibe of the place. It’s really the perfect room for us; we feel really at home there. We’ll be heading back there to record our next album.

CK: For the geeks out there, describe your guitar rig.

DF: I run my Les Paul Standard into a tuner, a micro amp, wah, and to my head, which is a variant on a Marshall Plexi.

I play the head wide open in order to get full distortion, since there’s no preamp in the head. And, as people who’ve been to our shows have seen, I play my cabinet backwards, to help counter the volume. It’s a really loud rig that way, but I love it.

CK: How does being from northeast Ohio influence the band’s sound?

DF: As a band we’ve always drawn inspiration from northeast Ohio. I don’t think we could really avoid it.

I’ve always been drawn to the visual aesthetic of Cleveland and the surrounding towns, steel mills, bridges, abandoned factories; the area really carries a presence.

We try really hard to stay honest in our approach to making music and being in the band. We’re not out to fall in line in some genre, and we’re not out to create a false image for ourselves. We’re influenced by the people and culture here in Ohio, and we can’t help wearing it on our sleeve.

CK: What’s the last album you bought?

DF: Last album I bought was Tchaikovsky’s piano concerto #2. Before that it was RJD2’s “Deadringer” and The Pixies’ “Doolittle.” "

The Suede Brothers Recommend: Johnny Nobody

So who's Johnny Nobody?

Johnny_nobody
They're a Rock 'n' Roll trio out of Buffalo, NY, consisting of Andrew Vaeth (Guitar/ Vocals) Colin Roberts (Bass) Jay White (Drums), and according to their bio "Johnny Nobody's power lies in their shifting back and forth from barroom blues rock riffage, gritty psychedelia, fuzzed up power pop and unbridled punk energetics. The foundation of White's relentless pounding and crashing and Roberts' throbbing bass lines is covered over with Vaeth's blistering, distorted guitar and deceptively sweet choirboy gone wrong tenor. The result is unfettered, uncompromised rock and roll as it should be."

Check out the awesome 'Another Planet'

Other cool songs; 'Ill Will' & 'Lies Float'

If you like what you heard (I certainly did!) then you can meet & greet Johnny Nobody at these places - Facebook - Twitter - Bandcamp - ReverbNation - Myspace

You can also download a bunch of song for free at their Facebook & Bandcamp sites, and even better buy their album 'We Were Wrong All Along' for only $5 on Bandcamp (I just did!).

The Suede Brothers Explains Recent Lull In Activities

A message from The Suede Brothers "So...

We've had a lull in shows over the past couple of months, mainly due to school-related time conflicts. This will probably continue over the next couple of months. While we're not thrilled or satisfied with this lack of shows, we're using it to focus in on our songs we'll this summer, and we hope you'll be pleased with the outcome. We ask that you hang with us during this period of semi-senescence; we'll be offering up a new album this year.

Cheers."

Do The Suede Brothers need to worry about loosing us fans? Nah, Not at all! So why don't we all hit them up on their Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud, Youtube & wherever accounts and show Ohio's best rock band our support.

Live Review: The Suede Brothers @ WJCU 2012 Metal Benefit Concert

By The Rock Gene ~ "Closing out the night was The Suede Brothers, and if anyone thought that the bands that preceded them were loud, this group took things up a notch!

In fact, guitarist / vocalist Dylan Francis is known to turn his amp so loud that it has to be turned backwards away from the crowd lest their faces be melted by the sheer magnitude of the rockage. (Of course, the amp is fully mic’ed up so everyone can hear it!)

Of course, that little courtesy didn’t stop some of the people in attendance from finding the perfect spot to listen to their set – right in front of his amp! Jeff Niesel of the Cleveland Scene wrote a year ago that The Suede Brothers put on one of the area’s best live shows, and that fact was certainly true this evening. ~ Gene Natale, Jr."
